Michael Hobby is the inventor of the patented BIO-SPARGE(TM) remediation technology, the patented BIO-PURGE(TM) technology, and the patented METAL RECOVERY AND RECYCLING SYSTEM technology (MRRS) [U.S. PATENT 5,503,656].

Hobby is a distinguished hydrogeologist, internationally recognized in the fields of Environmental Science, Applied research and site-specific technology, and the foremost groundwater remediation specialist in the United States. He has lectured and instructed state regulatory officials, Oil company groups, graduate seminars, and served as an expert witness in environmental litigation. He participated with EPA Region 5 personnel in the enactment of environmental law and regulations incorporated in NAFTA, consulted with several states in development of environmental regulations, and met with corporate and private representatives and legal personnel.

BIO-SPARGE(TM) was first successfully Beta-tested at an International Paper Company site in central California. The prototype Mobile Remediation system was deployed at an AMOCO (Rainbow) station in central Utah involving a typical USB release. The prototype completed the project in 8 weeks, during which an accidental surface overflow by a tanker introduced hundreds of additional gallons into the subsurface. Subsurface activation was already established at that time, however; the additional release appeared as only a brief spike in monitoring well samples, and remarkably, the site was closed two weeks later.

So effective is the technology when properly applied that states have enacted special legislation and regulations to enable application of BioSparge technology to avoid long-term remediation projects utilizing Pump & Treat and other technologies known to be generally or marginally ineffective.

AN INTRODUCTION TO BIOSPARGE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROFESSIONAL [Hobby, 1997] is now avaiable for purchase on this site.

AN INTRODUCTION TO BIO-SPARGE(TM) FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROFESSIONAL is the original primer designed to educate environmental scientists, including geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental engineers, microbiologists, state and federal regulatory officials, and others in the physical, chemical, microbiological, geochemical, biochemical, and regulatory criteria required for successful implementation of the technology. This text provides a foundation for correctly applying BIOSPARGE technology across a variety of environmental contexts. The following outline gives an overview of the content:

Michael Hobby has also written a virtual environmental expose, his novel, GROUNDWATER; GROUNDWATER is an edge-of-your-seat environmental mystery and suspense thriller, but the environmental material and settings are drawn almost entirely from actual incidents and sites he encountered during an 18-year career as a hydrogeologist, Certified Environmental Manager, and entrepreneur. As you read GROUNDWATER, you will encounter aspects of HOBBY in several of the protagonists.

You can read several intitial chapters of GROUNDWATER without cost by going to the following link:

BIO-SPARGE(TM) Mobile Remediation systems have been licensed and applied at environmentally impaired sites in the United States, Canada, Mexico, every branch of the Armed Services, many states, and a broad spectrum of oil companies, national corporations and private projects. Hobby's companies manufactured and leased both BioSparge and MRRS mobile systems and deployed them to Licensees for use on state or federally approved sites. Hobby also operated the largest aquaculture facility in the United States for developing and growing bacteria and other contaminant-specific microorganisms.

MRRS was first demonstrated at the Stone Container Corporation in West Valley City, Utah in 1990, and was closed with no post-closure monitoring. MRRS is the only patented technology permitted for use by the DHS in California, as it does not fix metal contamination as sulphites or sulphates, but extracts metal cations and isolates them for recycling. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers mandated its use for extracting isomers of lead and arsenic from thousands of tons of metal-contaminated soils. The Marine Corp Logistics Command in Barstow, California certified its use for treatment of residual metal sludges in evaporation ponds to remove 9 target isomers. The technology also removes mercury from soils, including organic inclusions (sorted and treated separately), and the primary radionuclides: radium, Uranium-210, Polonium-210, Thorium, Plutonium and other isomers from soil and aqueous solution.
